Originally, the EED was formed to increase awareness of environmental issues within all divisions of engineering. Most engineers are now highly aware of the environment, which begs the question of what the main focus of the EED should be.

What would you like the EED to be today? (select as many as you wish) ?

A learned society (involved in/organising conferences, producing technical publications, etc.)

An information supplier (e.g. of useful literature, information about conferences)
A forum acting across divisions to foster environmental awareness among all engineers (as per the original intention)
An educator (e.g. increasing awareness of environmental engineering at school level; facilitating members achieving relevant CDP points

Other – please detail

We currently organise conferences and lectures (at the University of the Witwatersrand), contribute at a technical level (e.g. the Minimum Requirements), and arrange for relevant papers in the SAICE magazine, Civil Engineering .

What would you like the EED to be involved in? (select as many as you wish)
Conferences
Site visits
Wits lectures
Civil Engineering magazine
Technical submissions on key issues
Activities with local branches

We hold an annual competition for projects that exemplify good environmental management, and the winner is awarded the Bob Laburn trophy at a gala function. There tends to be a poor response to requests for entries, and we have to solicit applications. We also award an annual prize for the best technical paper by a South African in the environmental field.
Regarding such competitions (tick the applicable responses)
Yes No   Are you aware of the Bob Laburn award?
Yes No   Are you aware of the best technical paper award?

If you answered YES to the last question, what are your suggestions for improving awareness?
General Issues
We would like your ideas and comments regarding the EED's future development
Do you have any suggestions for environmental projects/raising environmental awareness that the EED should be involved with (e.g. educational projects, etc)?
Our current committee is very white and very male; can you suggest (preferably with a contact number!) people outside of this category that may be interested in becoming more involved in the EED?  (Please note that the committee is based in the Gauteng area, and people should be qualified Civil Engineers.)
