Structural Steel Design

Greg Parrott

This book should provide a valuable learning guide and set of notes to students at Universities in Southern Africa, and covers the syllabus for the structural steel design component of the subject "Structural Steel & Timber Design lll" towards the National Diploma: Civil Engineering. This books will also be an useful reference to practising structural engineers.

The nation’s economy and the quality of life of its citizens depend heavily on the supply and efficient operation of infrastructure. Yet the civil engineering industry faces unprecedented challenges in attracting, recruiting and retaining the staff needed to design, manage and deliver this infrastructure.

The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to the general concepts of limit state design and then to take the reader through the design of structural steel elements keeping in close touch with the relevant causes of the code of practice for the structural use of steel SANS 10162-1 2005. It is important that this book be read in conjunction with this code of practice.

The general approach adopted is to introduce the student to the basic prinicples applicable to each section before working through a typical design example to support the theory covered.
