CORPORATE STRATEGY AND PLAN

SUPPORTING DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA

SAICE'S MISSION

To advance professional knowledge and improve the practice of civil engineering

In support of SAICE's mission, SAICE strives:

  • to be a learned society for all those associated with Civil Engineering;
  • to enable our members, through consultation and accountability, to provide the community with environmentally and economically sustainable infrastructure;
  • to cater for the interests and needs of our members by creating an effective communication channel in a strong, dynamic and stable organisation;
  • to provide our members with continuing education in technical, managerial and communication skills;
  • to advance and uphold the professional ethics of the civil engineering profession;
  • enhance the recognition of civil engineering as a highly respected profession and a desirable career; and
  • above all, to encourage our members to strive for excellence in civil engineering


SAICE'S STRATEGIC GOALS

Goal 1: Technical Leadership: Support the attainment of excellence in civil engineering, by encouraging innovation in civil engineering and facilitating the development and transfer of information, best practice and standards relating to civil engineering.

    i) Enhance SAICE's technical leadership role in civil engineering.
    ii) Promote innovation in civil engineering.
    iii) Enhance SAICE's leadership role in technical guidelines, best practice, standards, codes and specifications.
    iv) Enhance SAICE's leadership role in policy and legislation impacting on the national developmental agenda and affecting civil engineering.
    v) Promote environmentally and economically sustainable infrastructure.
    vi) Promote an integrated approach to civil engineering processes and projects.


Goal 2: Professional Development: Enhance and maintain a culture of life-long learning and of high professional competence of SAICE members.

    i) Promote a culture of life-long learning.
    ii) Promote and enhance continuing education opportunities, programmes and delivery systems for civil engineering.
    iii) Facilitate and participate in the development and maintenance of educational and professional standards against appropriate global benchmarks.
    iv) Facilitate networking and co-operating with educational institutions and other structures and organizations with an interest in the built environment and related engineering professions.


Goal 3: Growth and Participation: Grow the membership base and the active participation of members within SAICE.

    i) Develop and implement programmes to attract new members and to retain existing members.
    ii) Encourage and promote the active involvement of members in SAICE activities.
    iii) Attract potential members and increase active participation, with a special emphasis on black and female members.


Goal 4: Relevance and Recognition: (a) Enhance the value and contribution of SAICE (and the visibility of this value and contribution) to members, the profession, and society; and (b) Enhance the contribution and recognition of civil engineering to the growth and development of South Africa, and enhance the recognition of civil engineering as a highly respected profession and a desirable career.

    i) Enhance the quality and delivery of value-added SAICE outputs.
    ii) Enhance the visibility of SAICE products and services, outputs and member benefits.
    iii) Increase national and local government awareness of the importance of, and need for, maintenance, rehabilitation and development of infrastructure, and position SAICE as a key stakeholder with government.
    iv) Increase the public awareness of the positive and far-reaching impact of civil engineering on society.
    v) Influence government policy on matters affecting civil engineering.
    vi) Actively promote solutions that encourage enhanced delivery of infrastructure for the benefit of all South Africans.
    vii) Promote co-operation between SAICE and similar organizations in Southern Africa in the interest of socio-economic development in the region.


Goal 5: Organisational Transformation: Enhance the organisational transformation of SAICE, ensuring the optimal use of resources and member participation.

    i) Improve the operational efficiency within SAICE.
    ii) Provide for effective communication mechanisms within and among all the structures and units of the Institution.
    iii) Implement performance monitoring and evaluation systems within SAICE.
    iv) Develop broad and varied revenue services, and maximise the deployment of financial resources.
    v) Take a leading and facilitating role in the built environment professions.
